Comments: There are differences between
tramps, hobos and bums. The itinerant group marked the
fenceposts, rocks and trees along the tracks as they approached
town to advise their fellow travellers where to find a good
meal, some work, or to warn of tar and feathers. You need a
really big, old dictionary to find a sampling of those signs
and their meanings.
